TASTING :

The amber dress remains deep despite the years. The nose is intense and precise, with cocoa, blond tobacco and the noble nutty aroma so characteristic of these very old vins doux naturels. The palate is ample, fine, soft and sensual.

PERFECT AGREEMENTS:

This 55-year-old wine reveals astonishing characteristics of youth and freshness. Enjoy it with royal hare, apate persille cheeses such as Roquefort or desserts based on chocolate and dried fruit. Open one hour before serving and decant at 15°C.

PLOTS, TERROIR, CULTURE :

Decomposed schists and black marls, southern exposure.
Soil maintenance by plowing. The age of the Grenache vines, trained in goblet form, is over 40 years. The average yield is 18 hl/ha with planting densities of 3500 to 4000 vines/ha.

GRAPE VARIETIES :

90 % Grenache noir, 5% Maccabeu, 5% Carignan.

GRAPE HARVEST :

Hand harvesting. Destemmed picking

VINIFICATION :

Hand harvesting. De-stemmed picking .Mutage on grains followed by a 30-day maceration to extract the material (aroma, polyphenols) contained in the berries and thus obtain a beautiful balanced structure between fruit, alcohol and sugar.

BREEDING AND BOTTLING :

Aged for one year in glass carboys placed outside, followed by 54 years in 350 hl oak tuns. This particularly long ageing process, the hallmark of Mas Amiel, allows the wine to acquire great maturity of aroma and structure.

ROBERTPARKER.COM

The oldest vintage-dated Maury still being sold by Mas Ariel, the 1969 Maury Vintage is sweet, silky and succulent, with smoky notes that are beginning to take over from the walnut flavors still at the core. It's medium to full-bodied, and while in no immediate danger of cracking up, I don't see it getting any better from here. Drink up.

DECANTER

Velvet-textured and full of walnut, date and dried fig flavours. A harmonious wine, with dry woody and umami notes and a gentle rancio undercurrent. So concentrated and intense. Surprisingly structured, with chewy tannins and plentiful acidity and a long finish.

JANCIS ROBINSON

Smells younger than the 99! Tea and figs and something incredible tangy. Coffee. But the astounding thing is the freshness. And the spice. And the complexity. And the texture. Oolong, dates, chocolate, salt and shimmer. I want to go to bed with this wine … If the 1999 was a sculpture, the 1969 is like a national museum, a massive colonnaded building broached by marble steps and filled with light and shadows, edifices and crannies, vaults and ringing corridors and dust and treasures. It is also a wine that deserves hours and hours, silent conversations, listening and contemplation.
