TASTING:

Tile-coloured colour with coffee highlights. The nose reveals intense notes of chocolate powder and fresh fig, accompanied by fresh notes of peppermint. The palate is surprising, both for its frank and powerful attack and for its astonishing acidity for a wine of this age. Notes of fresh fig and walnut assert themselves on a perfect balance between alcohol, sugar and acidity.

PERFECT AGREEMENTS:

Vintage 80 reveals astonishing youthful characteristics and promises very long aged. Enjoy it with Comtés or desserts based on chocolate and dried fruit. Open an hour before serving and decant at 15°C.

PLOTS, TERROIR, CULTURE :

Decomposed schists and black marls, southern exposure.
Soil maintenance by plowing. The age of the Grenache vines, trained in goblet form, is over 40 years. The average yield is 18 hl/ha with planting densities of 3500 to 4000 vines/ha.

GRAPE VARIETIES :

90 % Grenache noir, 5% Maccabeu, 5% Carignan.

GRAPE HARVEST :

Hand harvesting. Destemmed picking

VINIFICATION :

Mutage on grains followed by a 30-day maceration to extract the material (aroma, polyphenols) contained in the berries and thus obtain a beautiful balanced structure between fruit, alcohol and sugar.

BREEDING AND BOTTLING :

Aged for one year in glass carboys placed outside, followed by 27 years in 350 hl oak tuns. This particularly long ageing process, the hallmark of Mas Amiel, allows the wine to acquire great maturity of aroma and structure.

JANCIS ROBINSON

Pale garnet colour. Reminiscent of great old sherry with that acetone character. Then it's more like tawny port on the palate – dried fig and milk chocolate, still some primary fruit to give freshness and plenty of persistence. This will last indefinitely but is beautiful to drink now, and such an underrated style.

ROBERTPARKER.COM

The seductive 1980 Maury Vintage features walnut-aged aromas but also plentiful cherry fruit, even after nearly 40 years of aging. It's fresher and more vibrant than the NV 40 Ans, if perhaps a touch less complex. Medium to full-bodied, it finishes silky and long.

GUIDE TO THE FRENCH WINE REVIEW 2024

The two oxidative ones reign supreme, with a 1980 of cold tobacco, dark chocolate and orange peel, which leaves its mark on the palate.
