Bettane et Desseauve 2020 : 18.5

A Vintage of great concentration with aromas of nuts, so characteristic of very old sweet wines, mingling with notes of "old bachelor" jam. The material is dense, taut and racy. Vintage 1985, a MAS AMIEL of substance.

TASTING:

Deep, dense color for this highly concentrated vintage. Powerful nose of cocoa, prunes and noble nutty aromas so characteristic of very old sweet wines, accompanied by fresh, peppery notes. The palate is suave and racy, with a clean, powerful attack and surprising acidity for a wine of this age. Notes of fig and walnut assert themselves on a perfect balance of alcohol, sugar and acidity, with a mocha finish.

PERFECT AGREEMENTS:

This 30-year-old wine reveals astonishing characteristics of youth and freshness. It is ideal with hare à la royale and blue-veined cheeses. As a digestive, Vintage 85 wraps chocolate chips in velvet. Open an hour before serving and decant at 15°C

PLOTS, TERROIR, CULTURE :

Decomposed schists and black marls, southern exposure.
Soil maintenance by plowing. The age of the Grenache vines, trained in goblet form, is over 40 years. The average yield is 18 hl/ha with planting densities of 3500 to 4000 vines/ha.

GRAPE VARIETIES :

90 % Grenache noir, 5% Maccabeu, 5% Carignan.

GRAPE HARVEST :

Hand harvesting. Destemmed picking

VINIFICATION :

Mutage on grains followed by a 30-day maceration to extract the material (aroma, polyphenols) contained in the berries and thus obtain a beautiful balanced structure between fruit, alcohol and sugar.

BREEDING AND BOTTLING :

Aged for one year in glass carboys placed outside, followed by 27 years in 350 hl oak tuns. This particularly long ageing process, the hallmark of Mas Amiel, allows the wine to acquire great maturity of aroma and structure.

The Maury Doux 1985 has a deep, coffee color to go with an almost Rancio-like bouquet of sour figs, toffee, licorice and toasted spice. This gives way to a seriously concentrated, decadent and chewy effort that still manages to stay fresh and lively on the palate. As usual, this is 100% Grenache that was brought up all in foudre. I’d drink bottles over the coming 5-10 years, but it will evolve for longer.

GUIDE TO THE FRENCH WINE REVIEW 2020

The old Maurys, patinated by time, are sublime, the airy 40-year-old Rancio and the vibrant, evocative, powerful, intoxicating 1985. More than curiosities, these are great wines, still affordable and capable of multiple and flamboyant gastronomic pairings.
